Four County Players Teen Audition Workshop

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Always wanted to audition, but weren’t sure what to expect? Maybe you’ve auditioned before but want more experience? Learn what happens at a Four County Players audition, and hear what directors are looking for; practice your skills and build confidence! Plus, we’re offering a session specifically about auditioning for colleges lead by expert instructor, Denise Stewart.

There will be an opportunity to practice cold reading and monologues, a dance audition, as well an opportunity to sing an audition song with pianist Erica Umback – if you would like!

Whether you are a seasoned performer or totally new to theatre, this will be a great opportunity to gain experience and strengthen your audition skills! We hope you’ll join us!

Morning Session: 9:30 to 12:30
Monologues (bring a prepared monologue if you would like)
Cold Reading/Scene Work

Afternoon Session: 1:30 to 4:30
Auditioning For Colleges
Musical Theatre (Bring 30-32 bars of a prepared audition song of choice, with sheet music)

(Full day students should bring a packed lunch. Lunch break will be from 12:30 to 1:30)

Meet the Instructors!

Denise Stewart – Denise Stewart is a freelance theatre artist who writes, directs, and performs. She toured her one woman show, Dirty Barbie and other girlhood tales throughout the Southeast as well as runs in New York, DC, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She’s a former Tedx speaker and speaker coach who coaches companies and individuals on the power of storytelling and strengthening presence. Her TV pilot, Adjuncts, was a finalist for the Virginia Film Award. She’s been a lecturer at UVA since 2014 and currently teaches in the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy.

Geri Carlson Sauls – Geri Carlson Sauls is so glad to see Four County offering audition workshops! She has been behind the scenes directing and/or choreographing for over 20 years. Her most recent directing venture was Winter Break, and is set to direct/choreograph Elf this coming holiday season. She brings years of expertise on what to expect at auditions and how to make sure you make the best first impression! But most importantly, she wants to see you enjoy auditions, as they can be a great learning experience and a chance to meet some amazing people.

Erica Umback – Erica Eumback has been Music Directing, Rehearsing, and Accompanying Musical Theatre shows in the Charlottesville area for the past twenty years, and from Four County Players, Live Arts, Play On, UVA, PVCC, DMR, Tandem, Black Box Players, to the Charlottesville Vocal Arts Society. Favorite shows music directed include Rent, Ain’t Misbehavin’, The Fantasticks, and Into the Woods. Favorite challenges: sight-reading, accompanying singers of all ages and skill levels, and stepping in last-minute to help the shows go on! Ever have an accompanist question? The Sessions!

The sessions:

Musical Theatre – learn and practice a brief dance audition and workshop singing auditions. Participants are invited to bring a prepared audition song to perform and receive feedback (optional.)

Monologues – discuss choosing and performing monologues. Participants are encouraged to bring a prepared monologue to work on. Monologue samples will be provided.

Cold Reading/Scene Work – what is “cold reading” and how can you perfect it? In this session participants will have an opportunity to work on partner scenes and brush up their scene work skills.

College Auditions – this session will address auditioning for colleges. Hear from experts in the field on what to expect and how to best prepare for college auditions.

Students attending the full day should bring a packed lunch.
